Maxim Machine Gun Serial Numbers

 Posted admin

“Pom-Pom” was the name given to the 37mm Maxim gun by the Boers of South Africa, based on the gun’s sound. It was a Maxim machine gun scaled up to the quite impressive 37mm caliber, intended primarily for naval use defending large vessels against small torpedo boats. This particular example is serial number 2024, made in 1889 and then sold three times before being ultimately purchased by the United States Coast Guard and installed on the USS Manning (along with a second gun, number 2026). The Manning was promptly put into military service by the Navy and steamed down to Cuba, where it participated in the first bombardment of Cuba during the Spanish-American War.

Hi, I've just got a Russian Maxim and wondered if anybody would be able to give me some information about it.I'd like to know where it was manufactered. It seem to have about 97% matching numbers, but I don't know if this is the norm. There does not seem to be a lot of info about on thses guns, particlarly relating to their wartime accessories. The wartime commercial sales numbers include the 7,185 made by Marlin Rockwell Corp. For Russia to the Colt Model 1914 specifications. They were given Colt serial numbers in the Colt serial number range and were billed to the customers by Colt, not by Marlin Rockwell. All guns listed were either Model 1895 or the Model 1895/1914 Colt guns.

These 37mm guns could fire a wide variety of projectiles, including solid rounds which could pierce an inch (25mm) of iron armor at 100 yards and hollow rounds filled with black powder and fused to explode on impact. During World War One, they would be pushed into anti-aircraft service, with the explosive rounds being extremely effective on early aircraft (when you could get a hit, anyway).

Allow me to put on my Tikkakoski Company Sales Rep hat for a moment, and explain to you why as a modern military force (in 1933) the obvious choice in support machine guns is the Tikkakoski Model 1932 Maxim. I’ll try to put this in terms that will resonate with today’s tactical advertising…

I hope that wasn’t too over the top…our friend Hrachya sent us a copy of a 1933 brochure on the Finnish Tikkakoski company’s 1932 model Maxim gun, and every claim in there comes straight from the document (although FWIW, Dolf Goldsmith suggests that the “fast” rate of fire was more like 800rpm, not 1000). The brochure was printed in English in 1933, and makes for some interesting reading – it is definitely an advertising pitch rather than technical manual and the different perspective is interesting to see.
